Why a teacher, when this site is free?
Because Thai is a tonal language, and tones are the one thing you can't self-check. You can learn all 44 consonants here, get every flashcard right, and still say "horse" when you meant "dog". ม้า and หมา are the same three sounds in a different shape. Your ears haven't been trained to hear the difference yet. Someone else's have.
The other thing a teacher gives you is a deadline. An app is patient forever, which sounds kind but is actually the problem. A lesson on Tuesday at seven is a reason to practise on Monday.
What to expect from a first lesson
- It's a conversation, not an exam. Most first lessons are mostly the teacher working out where you actually are, which is usually further along than you think.
- Bring what you've been practising. If you've been tracing consonants here, say so. It saves twenty minutes of ground-covering.
- Expect to be corrected on tones early. It's the whole game. Better in week one than after a year of confident mistakes.
- Lessons are online. You need a laptop, headphones, and somewhere you're willing to make strange vowel noises out loud.

A decent order to do this in
- Consonants first. Trace them until the shapes stop looking like decoration. Start here.
- Then vowels, which is where reading actually clicks. Vowel practice.
- Then tone rules: the part everybody skips and later regrets. Tone rules and quiz.
- Then a teacher, to find out which half of it you've been saying wrong.
